Many organisations rely on the kindness of unpaid volunteers. Whether you are living in Penang or are visiting, here are some charities/organisations that need your help.
Penang Animal Welfare Society (4PAWS)
4PAWS is a registered, not for profit, animal rescue shelter based in Penang. The shelter was founded in 2011 by animal lover and advocate Barbara Janssen. Barbara’s aim for 4PAWS is to rescue, rehabilitate where necessary, and ultimately find permanent homes for the many stray and abandoned dogs in her care. They are always in need of volunteers for jobs such as washing dogs, walking and playing with the dogs, handyman activities and general cleaning duties.
The SPCA Penang is a non-profit organization whose objective is to educate the community in responsible pet ownership. They care for and protect abandoned animals. They actively encourage volunteers to participate in activities such as bathing and socializing with the animals, washing and painting SPCA premises as well as fund raising activities.
Save Our Strays
Save our Strays is an umbrella organisation that brings together NGOs and other animal rescuers to save stray animals. There are many volunteer opportunities including administration, rescue, fostering, education, spaying and feeding.
Penang Heritage Trust

The Penang Heritage Trust (PHT) was established in 1986 as a charitable NGO. their aim is to promote and conserve Penang’s heritage. PHT played a major part in the successful campaign to award George Town the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. Not only are they involved conserving buildings, they also monitor the hills and coastlines, parks and promenades of Penang. Volunteers are required in areas such as administration and fundraising.

Wonder Wilderfarm is a community project promoting sustainable agriculture and lifestyle. One of the ways they do this is to organise the monthly Funmers Life Market that sells fresh organic produce, handmade items, food, plants, etc. They need people with different expertise and interests to help in several areas. These include tasks such as weeding, fertilising, transplanting, pond digging, farmhouse building, signboard designing, event planning and coordinating.
Accommodation and meals are provided for those who volunteer for more than one day.
Penang Adventist Hospital

The Penang Adventist Hospital welcomes people from all walks of life who would like to volunteer their time and skills in various areas such as attendant, clerical, community development, pharmacy etc. Volunteers must be at least 17 years of age and in good health and be able to work for a minimum of 3 hours a day.
Asia Community Service
Asia Community Service was established in October 1996, as a non-profit organisation targeted towards young children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Their aim is to empower people with special needs towards a more meaningful and fulfilling life. Volunteers are required who can commit on a regular basis in areas such as art and craft, design, pottery, sewing, cooking and playing. Volunteers also required for one off events such as health camps and food fairs.
