Vegetarian PenangThe Leaf Healthy House is a charming looking vegetarian restaurant located on busy Penang Street in Little India. Outside are herbs growing in plants, lots of greenery and cycles for rent. Step inside and you will find that the Leaf offers healthy, tasty and affordable food.

The interior is bright and inviting with tables covered in checked tablecloths and comfortable wicker chairs. A selection of organic products sit on simple shelving as well as a beautiful quote by Gandhi which reads ““Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s need. But not every man’s greed.”

The Leaf is definitely a place to visit for the health conscious and is a LOHAS (Life of Health and Sustainability) cafe. The food doesn’t contain MSG, white sugar, white salt, artificial colourings, preservatives, garlic, onions and gluten. What you do get is fresh and natural foods including brown rice, brown sugar, rock salt, coconut and olive oil which is used sparingly.

The menu offers a great variety of Asian fusion dishes as well as burgers and sandwiches. The spicy burger was a delight, made with homemade potato curry. The potato curry had just the right amount of spice and was served on a bed of fresh and crunchy lettuce leaves, tomatoes and cabbage, all inside a lovely seeded bun. Yummy.

The nasi ulam, steamed rice mixed with mixed herbs and served with pineapple and lotus root soup was delicious as was the mama rice set, served with tofu, veggies and soup.

If you’re still hungry you can try the boiled edamame beans with Himalayan rock salt or the colourful Vietnamese hand rolls filled with brown rice vermicelli, peppers, lettuce and fungi and a green herb dipping sauce.
