Are you in pain? For most people who suffer with some sort of muscular or joint pain, a course of painkillers will usually do the trick. However, for others the pain continues and becomes chronic and difficult to manage. This is when thoughts may turn to trying complementary and alternative therapies.
Osteopathy and chiropractic are two therapies that successfully treat muscle and joint pain. How do osteopathy and chiropractic work and what is the difference?
Osteopaths are skilled in the diagnosis and treatment of the structure and function of the body in relation to muscles, bones, joints, ligaments and connective tissue. Through adjustments to the body and by stretching and massage of the muscles, pain can be significantly reduced.
In a recent US study undertaken by scientists at the University of North Texas, they found that patients who received ultrasound therapy experienced very little improvement in their chronic low back pain. Those who received osteopathic treatment experienced significant reduction in their level of pain as well as reduction in their reliance on prescription painkillers.
In addition to back pain, osteopaths can treat migraines, neck and shoulder pain, knee pain, sciatica, prolapsed discs, repetitive strain, sports injuries and even digestive and menstrual disorders. Osteopathy is suitable for people of any age, from babies and children to the elderly.
Chiropractic is defined as the diagnosis and manipulative treatment of misalignment of the joints, especially of the spinal column. Chiropractors are similar to osteopaths in that they perform spinal manipulation and adjustments in order to restore mobility and to alleviate pain and muscle tightness.
The Chiropractic method of diagnosis usually includes a postural and physical examination, x-ray, para-spinal infrared thermal scan and even blood tests to decide on the best course of treatment. They are also trained to provide information on nutrition and diet, stress management and therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises.
Common conditions treated with chiropractic are back pain, shoulder and neck pain, headaches, leg and knee pain, repetitive strain, arthritis, scoliosis and prolapsed discs.
Research has shown that patients with low-back pain treated by chiropractic showed more improvement than patients treated by their general practitioner. Chiropractic is suitable for people of all ages.
Osteopathy vs Chiropractic
Even though osteopathy and chiropractic seem very similar therapies, there are some differences. Chiropractors focus more on the treatment of the spine and joints using quick spinal adjustments and mechanical devices to reduce pain and relax muscles.
Osteopaths also focus on spine and joints but also the rest of the body that may not seem related to the spine such as digestive or respiratory system. Osteopaths are much more hands on and spend time stretching and massaging the muscles.
